Miami was... the combination of a much needed vacation mixed with a trip back in time, to a world that was once mine, and a life I never stopped dreaming of creating.
My mom and I went together, mainly to visit her side of the family. She was born and raised there. Pretty cool right? Back then, Miami didn't have the sky scrapers and famous South Beach it has today. It didn't have the huge Latin/Cuban population and famous celebs running it. South Beach was full of old people, there was way more sand, Art Deco design {that's still there, but now they're filled with clubs and fancy restaurants}, and Miami was full of jewish people {they're still there, too}. I always feel like you need a passport to get down there. Not to mention my mom's side of the family can be pretty southern... and crazy.
I spent the long weekend practicing my dusty skills in Spanish, soaking in some Vitamin D, being driven crazy by my family {gotta love em}, snapping lots of pictures, and taking a proper tour of Miami nightlife with some friends who were coincidentally down there visiting, too.
It really is a super wonderful place, and it gave me the opportunity to let go, turn off, reboot, and reflect on so many things that have happened in the past two years since I was last there {like graduation, backpacking Europe, and my dad passing}.
What are these places?
My mom and I stayed two nights on Key Biscayne at The Silver Sands Resort, where my parents honeymooned. It's a super quiet, romantic and peaceful little hotel right on the beach, with cottages you can rent, as well as a huge pool and private beach access. I prefer this over South Beach any day.
We has mimosas and watched the boats go by on the Waterfront in Coconut Grove at Scotty's Landing, a long-time favourite spot of ours.
And one night, I went bar hopping with some friends starting at The Sandbar in Coconut Grove {a University of Miami hangout}, and trekked all over Miami from Coral Gables, to the Grove, to South Beach, Downtown, back to the Grove, and finally back to the Gables {for those of you who know Miami geography}. All my money was spent on cab fair, but it was worth it.
xx!
