yesterday i found myself unexpectedly overwhelmed with emotion.  i was stuck on the 14th street bridge, trying to get from my apartment on capitol hill to alexandria, va {aka nova - northern virginia}, when traffic came to a complete standstill on 395 south.

this route, a route that i take all the time, and one that usually takes me about 20 minutes, is the main highway road that goes right by the pentagon.  oh, right, it's 9/11, how stupid can i be?  i was on my way to a nail appointment.  i was going to get a mani/pedi for my birthday tomorrow, with my aunt who was treating me.  and i didn't even stop to think about 9/11 until, well, i was forced to.

these songs accompainied me on what became an hour long drive.  the entire highway in front of the pentagon had been closed off, and i was re-routed and forced to take the most round-about way to get to this stupid nail appointment - an appointment i suddenly couldn't believe i was so vain to be taking part in - on september 11th.

i guess you could say i was pretty lucky during the attacks in 2001.  none of my family or friends worked in the world trade center or in the pentagon, and none of them were on any of those planes.  ten years ago, i was in the 9th grade.  i was about to turn 14.  all i can remember is a shear sense of panic and anxiety in the hallways at school.  nobody really told me what was going on, and it wasn't until someone found my dad wandering around the cafeteria during lunch that i realized something was actually really wrong.  he came to take me home.

"what's going on dad?"
"you'll see when we get home.  it's all over the TV."

he could hear the plane crash into the pentagon from our home in falls church, va, with the windows open.  he watched the second plane crash into the world trade center live on TV.  my mom was just waking up from having closed her restaurant the night before, and i was dumbfounded.

my heart and prayers and thoughts are with everyone and their family who were directly affected by the 9/11 attacks.  i can't believe how much i am moved by its ten year anniversery.
